This remarkable set of replica Spintria (plural: Spintriae) faithfully recreates the historic Roman brothel tokens, featuring a delicately hand-distressed finish that enhances their authentic appearance.
According to Friedlander's 1886 proposal, these tokens were likely used to gain entry to brothels, though some scholars suggest they may have served as substitutes for official coinage in illicit transactions. Their controversial history is highlighted by an incident during Caracalla’s reign, when an equestrian was sentenced to death for introducing an imperial coin into a brothel—his life was spared only upon the emperor’s demise. Today, with their distinct numerical inscriptions, these coins make excellent gaming counters or collectible tokens.
Each piece is meticulously engraved and hand-polished, with the obverse depicting intricate erotic imagery, while the reverse displays Roman numerals within a wreath (1–16). Every detail is hand-finished to museum-quality standards, though minor variations may occur due to the artisanal nature of the craftsmanship.
